NOSPR Concert Hall is a 1800-seat symphonic concert hall in Katowice and part of the newly built headquarter of the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR). The orchestra, originally founded in 1935 in Warsaw, is one of the 2 national Polish orchestras and has been based in Katowice since 1945. The new building also houses a smaller chamber hall and the administrative offices of the organization.
In late 2008, the local architectural firm KONIOR STUDIO Tomasz Konior won the competition for project architect. On the recommendation of internationally renowned pianist Krystian Zimerman, who was born in the region and served as an advisor to the project, Nagata Acoustics was awarded the role of acoustical consultant for the room acoustics of the main concert hall.
The design of the concert hall used the traditional shoe-box configuration inherited from the competition proposal as a starting point, and adapted it by increasing the width of the hall beyond a typical shoebox shape and adding audience seating around all sides of the stage in order to reduce the distance between the audience and the stage, thus increasing the sense of intimacy from visual and acoustical perspectives.
